The Value of Focus during Karate Competition

Remember the value of Focus!

I’m sitting here a the desk at Culver Karate Club in Connellsville, PA. and was just thinking of the value of focus.  Most people never even think about focus let alone apply it.  In my learning, teaching and competition during my years of training in Shotokan Karate, I’ve had to use focus in many different ways.

Today I’m just going to consider the value of focus in competition.  I often think about times that I had competed against people that looked intimidating or had a reputation that they thought should worry me.  I simly think to myself that they were in for the fight of their life and then would set out to prove it.  When I would consider the possibility of losing then it was over.  When I would consider the posibility of not getting first I didn’t.

Use focus, but use it properly.  Don’t consider defeat and if defeat comes anyway, you know that you did your best!  Focusing your mind is what I’m talking about.  Focus only on the positive outcome.  It may not work all the time but you have to practice everything to get good at it.  Focus is the same way.  Don’t use it and you will never see the value of it.  Negative people know about focus, they don’t realize it though.  They focus on the bad, losing, not getting what they want, someone else knows someone or is just lucky.  Focus and make your own luck!  Above all train hard and it becomes easy to focus on the positive because if did your homework then you should be able to focus on the positive real easy because you know you’re better than your opponent.
