Why not 110%

New Years I made a resolution to be able to do 100 push-ups.  I’ve never been able to do that many.  One time about 25 years ago I did 97.  Never 100.  Well I set the goal I made a tracking form.  I had a plan and on May 15th when I was sure I could do 100 straight I did.  I felt I could’ve done it early but didn’t want to try and fail.  I also was enjoying the journey and was afraid I’d stop working out.

Since I didn’t stop working on my push-ups, I decided to over 1000 in a workout and do all my katas at the same time.  My other karate resolution was to learn all of the Shotokan katas.  I usually worked on 15 and there were 12 more that I had briefly known or never learned.   I require 10 for Black Belt and we use several others for Karate competition.  So I learned all 27 even before I did broke the 100 push-up barrier.  I figured out how many push-ups I’d need to do in between katas to accomplish my goal of 100 plus 27 katas.  Before long I broke that barrier too.  Now I’ve done that quite a few times.

What to do next?  Can’t stop yet.  Stupid me, why not some ridiculous amount of push-ups for the month of October.  Tenth month, why not 10,000.   Ok.  Well the first day I did 1000 and was on my way.  As I got near the end of October I decided that I could crash through that barrier too.

Why not 110%.  Anything worth doing is worth doing 110%.  I’ve always heard, “Give 110%”.  Sooooo!  We’ll I ended the month doing 11,000 push-ups for the month.  Cool.   During the month I went from being able to do 112 push-ups straight through to 131.  Nice.

One reason I started to do push-ups was that I wasn’t satisfied with my physical condition.  I could probably do 50 or 60 push-ups straight through but I also was not satisfied with the fact that I could never do 100 push-ups.   These goals started with wanting to do 100.

Guys set one goal and decide on the next, then the next and so forth.  Some time you have a long term goal in mind at the out set and sometimes the long term goal keeps getting reset because you can now see further.

Not bad for a 60 year old huh?

I don’t’ know what my next goal is but I have a couple bouncing around in the graying head.

Don’t let your dreams stay dreams!
