Be Atypical
I told my students today that if they want to be good be typical and practice what everyone normally does and be better at it. If you want to be great do the atypical, or as in the Movie Young Dr. Frankenstein, (Abynormal). Typical is what everyone else does so if you know what is typical you can be predictable.
Certain styles do certain things well and other things not so well. Improve your weak points so that they become stronger. Observe and learn what other styles do and see if that could help you.
You need to throw a kick that is different from a different stance or angle or side. As a right hander fight like a left hander. As a left hander fight like a right hander with a strong side forward or just fight as a left hander. Left handers are 1 in 10, hence right handers do not get a chance to fight lefties as often. One of the best fighters I’ve ever known trained and fought as a left hander even though he’s a rightie. He won a national title as a purple belt in a black belt division as a result.
Most right handed point fighters fight right side forward but do not throw the right handed reverse punch. I realized this many moons ago and strived to resolve this. So now I enjoy fighting right forward and can throw a left reverse punch from that stance. Don’t be typical.
Learn how to throw punches from a side or back stance. Learn how to throw sidekicks from a front stance. Learn how to do your weak side techniques as well as your strong side. Do the unexpected, unusual and of course the Atypical.
Again do what everyone does (Typical) and you can become good with a lot of work. Do the Atypical and become great with the same amount of work. Pretty obvious. In some cases being different and/or strange or unusual can be a benefit. Good luck.
