Carry a Book!

Recently a kid went co co puffs and started cutting and stabbing on a college campus.   He stabbed over a dozen people.   I figured upon first hearing this that he must’ve had quite a large knife.  His weapon of choice was a box cutter.  No more than a 1 inch blade and it took a group of students to finally stop him by running him down and tackling him.

In this sort of incidents you should quickly grab the biggest thing you can and throw, strike or push it at the attacker.   Chair, table, desk, lamp or whatever is handy.  If you have time take your belt off and swing it at the attacker.  Start to look around you at the rooms you enter for escape routes and for likely problem people.  Look at the objects around you for something to throw or defend yourself with.

Kids in schools all seem to love the back pack thing these days.   Problem with them, in a self defense situation you are slowed down and if you fall down you will be like a turtle on its back, helpless.  Also the backpack gives the attacker something to grab and drag you down with if he chases you.   Furthermore, by putting the backpack on your back you’ve eliminated the possibility of using this in defense.  Kids should use a bag that hangs on their shoulder so it can be easily removed and used.   I you must use a back pack, at least carry the biggest hard back book you have so that you can hold it up and fend off attackers easily.  A punch would have no effect against a nice big geography book.  I commented that the geography book always seemed to be the biggest book in your bag and one of my students remarked, that’s because you have the whole world in that book.   Anyhow one should keep a book handy.  A big ol geography book could easily break someones arm or disarm someone.   A knife or box-cutter could never get through a book.   Old time sword fighters would surely use their shield as a weapon if they lost their sword.

There are weapons everywhere.  The public is worried about firearms but more lives are lost to hammers that guns every year.  Lamps, chairs, belts, brooms and anything that can increase your power can be used as a weapon.   I told my little school teacher black belt if she had a clip board and I started to demonstrate all the ways to block, parry and strike with it.   Her eyes opened wide.   If a students enraged parent runs into the edge of the book thrust into his/her nose the situation would turn quickly.  Don’t be a victim, use the things you have in your possession.

Again, Kids I stress start carrying the biggest book you have.  Love that book.  It may save your behind.  Think how you could use it.  A knife attack could be neutralized with the proper use of a book.

See kids, books are good for you.
